Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Board Certification ExamsThe ABPS's plastic & reconstructive surgery board certification exams enable successful candidates to present themselves to the public as qualified medical specialists in plastic & reconstructive surgery. Completing the plastic & reconstructive surgery board certification exams indicates mastery of plastic & reconstructive surgery medical experience and knowledge, as well as a professional commitment to adhere to the ABPS Medical Code of Ethics. The plastic & reconstructive surgery board certification examination process consists of written and oral exams. The format of the written exam is multiple-choice, single-response questions. The questions are developed and validated by Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery Diplomates of the Board of Certification in Surgery (BCS) under the direction of the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) and psychometric consultants. If successful in passing the written portion of the plastic & reconstructive surgery board certification exams, the candidate will advance to the oral exam at the next testing administration. The oral exam requires the applicant to submit 20 documented case reports. She/he will be tested on those case reports as well as other areas applicable to the broad field of plastic & reconstructive surgery. Trained examiners who are board certified in plastic & reconstructive surgery conduct the oral exam. Case reports should be accurate, well written, properly descriptive, and well-diversified. While the BCPRS recognizes that some plastic surgeons practice in a limited area of their field, every attempt must be made to present a well-diversified body of medical cases representing all areas of general plastic surgery. These areas must include general reconstructive, skin and soft tissues, head and neck, aesthetic, hand, trunk, and lower extremity, genitalia, and breast surgeries. |
