DISASTER MEDICINE RECERTIFICATION


An ABODM Diplomate is required to recertify every eight years after initial board certification. In order to qualify for recertification, an ABODM Diplomate must:

  1. Submit a Disaster Medicine recertification application form, along with payment of appropriate fee.  Refer to the recertification fee schedule*. 


  2. Be in conformity with the Code of Ethics of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc. (AAPS), be known in his/her community as an ethical member of the profession, and be active in Disaster Medicine.


  3. All ABODM Diplomates, in order to obtain recertification in Disaster Medicine, will participate in a regular schedule of Maintenance and Enhancement of Competency (MAEC).


    1. Submit documentation of a minimum of 50 post-graduate CME hours per calendar year of which a minimum of 25 post-graduate CME hours shall be in Disaster Medicine and the remainder shall be in a clinically-related field as set forth by the Credentials Committee of the ABODM and approved by the ABODM. Hours must be approved by the AAPS, AOA, AMA or RCPSC and submitted in the recertification packet.


    2. OR

    3. Submit documentation of a minimum of 25 post-graduate CME hours per calendar year in Disaster Medicine as set forth by the Credentials Committee of the ABDOM and approved by the ABODM. Hours must be approved by the AAPS, or AOA, or AMA, or RCPSC and submitted in the recertification packet. In addition, the ABODM Diplomate must accumulate a minimum 25 points per year from among the following choices:


      1. Field Disaster Medicine Deployment Credit


        1. Field Disaster Medicine Deployment Credit will be applied towards the recertification requirement according to the following formula:


          1. 8 points per deployment day not to exceed 40 points for any single deployment and not to exceed 80 points in any single calendar year.


      2. Scholarly Contribution to the American Academy of Disaster Medicine Credit


        1. Scholarly Contribution Credit will be applied towards the recertification requirement according to the following formula:


          1. 6 points for each 50-minute presentation given at an AAPS or AADM sponsored CME program.


          2. 3 points credit for each 30-minute presentation given at an AAPS or AADM sponsored CME program.


          3. 8 points credit for each 110-minute workshop given at an AAPS or AADM sponsored CME program.


          4. 8 points credit for published chapter or field manual.


          5. 5 points credit for each scholarly paper published in an AAPS or AADM sponsored journal.


  4. Provide a copy of current, unrestricted medical license in either the United States or Canada with expiration date.


  5. The ABODM requires that every Diplomate will be required to successfully pass an ABODM Recertification Written Examination every eight (8) years. Therefore, applicants certified in 2007 and beyond should plan on recertifying 8 years after the initial certification date.


  6. At least 25 of the CME hours received during the eight years prior to recertification must be obtained through AAPS sponsored programs.


  7. All ABODM Diplomates must complete a Medical Ethics Program approved by AAPS during the eight-year period preceding recertification. CME hours attained through this program may be applied to the annual CME requirement, and, if offered through the AAPS, to the AAPS-sponsored CME requirement.


  8. The CME hours utilized for each physician’s state and hospital requirements may be applied towards meeting the CME requirements for MAEC. The CME hours received through the self-assessments may also be applied towards meeting the CME requirements.


  9. Candidates must be current with all annual certification and maintenance fees.


  10. Each physician will annually attest to the completion of the CME and self-assessment requirements and, if requested, will provide written evidence to the ABODM and ABPS.


  11. All ABODM Diplomates must certify annually that all their licenses to practice medicine are full and unrestricted, and they have not been convicted of a felony. In addition, all Diplomates must advise ABODM and ABPS, in writing within 30 days, of any change to their licensure status.
